Wine Tasting in Chile

I recently returned from an extraordinary “business” trip to Chile. The week started in Santiago, where we explored—and sampled— nearby wineries.
From there, I joined a group of thirty winemakers, viticulturists and winery owners for a Wines of Chile tour; four fun-filled days of wine tastings, seminars and dinners in breathtaking Patagonia.
What I learned (aside from Chile being a long, narrow and very beautiful country):
- Chile has eighteen distinct wine regions.
- Chilean wines offer a lot of diversity.
- Because of its remoteness and the protection offered by the Andes, Chile has never had Phylloxera.
- In the cool climate areas, they are producing world class Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, and excellent sparkling wines.
Here are my new favorite Chilean wines:
- Veramonte Primus The Blend 2013
- Casa Lapostolle Cuvée Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
- Concha y Toro Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
- Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
- Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Sauvignon Blanc 2014
- Cousino Macul Chardonnay 2014
- Ritual Pinot Noir 2014
- Casa Silva Carmenere 2014
- Veramonte Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
